Spring Flowers Adorn the Gardens at Middleton Place
March 7, 2008-Charleston, SC ~ Mother Nature works her magic everyday of the year at Middleton Place, but her boldest and most colorful display is definitely in the spring. This year visitors will find their springtime favorites of azaleas and dogwoods mixed with still blooming camellias painting the garden with an array of colors. In addition, delicate wisteria, narcissus, pansies, redbud and dogwood trees offer colorful accents to America’s oldest landscaped Gardens laid out by Henry Middleton 267 years ago.
“It has been a very mild winter and the wonderful warm weather we are enjoying is bringing the Middleton Place Gardens alive with color,” said Vice President of Horticulture Sidney Frazier; “visitors will find the gardens in excellent shape and the azaleas should be spectacular.”
Spring is a time of renewal and new life, and visitors will enjoy meeting the newest additions to Middleton Place. The Plantation Stableyards looks forward to the arrival of baby lambs, piglets, chicks, and ducks. The two new Middleton Place water buffalo have been training all winter and will be busy assisting with spring chores. Visitor’s can see them working in the demonstration rice field as they prepare the ground for planting Carolina Gold Rice. Also in the Stableyards, the blacksmith, potter, carpenter and weaver demonstrate the skills needed to sustain an 18th century plantation. Visitors to Middleton Place will learn about African-American history at the permanent “Beyond the Fields” exhibit located in Eliza’s House, and daily African-American focus tours interpret the lives of slaves and freedmen that lived and worked at Middleton Place.
Enjoy views of the Rice Mill Pond and azalea hillside from the Middleton Place Restaurant. For lunch, Middleton Place visitors enjoy a new Prix Fixe menu. The menu is a three-course presentation of Low Country cuisine including She-Crab Soup, Shrimp and Grits, Cornmeal Fried Catfish, Huguenot Torte and other Middleton favorites. Lunch is served everyday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For dinner, guests enjoy an elegant, candlelight atmosphere. Organic and natural ingredients are used whenever possible in the preparation of food for the Middleton Place Restaurant and are picked fresh from the plantation’s garden.
